A reminder of simpler times, the game featured four plays to choose from. That was it — after the ball was snapped, you were on your own. If your opponent guessed your play, you’d be sacked (that’s how the defense worked).
Tecmo Bowl‘s arcade-like controls, mixed with its quasi-realistic teams and players (none of the team names were officially licensed, but the team colors and player names were all intact) made it a breakout hit that’s still fun to pick up and play to this very day.
